Course Description: This course is designed to provide 9th and 10th graders with the skills needed to be successful high school students of English. Our English class is a challenging, dynamic and active course designed to help you develop your skills as writers, readers and communicators. We will focus on developing the 4 C’s; communication, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. We will be following the requirements of the Common Core Standards for the 9th and 10th grade. Throughout the year we will work to learn, develop and practice the following skills:
Reading Literature
Reading Informational Texts
Writing (arguments & analysis, information & explanation, narrative)
Speaking and Listening
Language: grammar and vocabulary
Online Communication and Collaboration (Collaborize Classroom, Google Docs)

Responsibility for all of your actions.
Our classroom is a community of learners, where respect for each other and thoughtful interaction will take place on a daily basis. I expect students to listen when the teacher, or a peer, is presenting information, and thoughtfully respond in the appropriate fashion (discussion, notes, essays, etc.). To be successful in this course, students must bring an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Important Policies:
1. Email address: Students must have a valid email address to use in online class discussions. Email addresses must be school/work appropriate, (it will be used throughout school as well as for job and college applications). A gmail address is highly recommended.
2. Participation: Participation points will be given each day. To earn full participation points, students must arrive to class on time (in seats by conclusion of the bell) and participate fully for the entire 90 minute course.
3. Daily Planner Sheets: Must be filled out each day upon entering class.
4. Cell Phones: Students may not have phones out in class unless we are working on a project for which I have permitted phone use. If students have a phone out I will adhere to a 4 step policy: 1) take participation points, 2) take phone for one class 3) take phone for one day 4) take phone until a guardian comes to retrieve it during a group conference regarding phone use.
5. Absences and Late Work: Students have one day for each day day absent to turn in work for full credit. Check the website for missed assignments and daily agendas. If absent on the day a test or essay is due, students are responsible for getting them turned in on the day they return.
6. Grades: Students will be graded on classroom participation, class work/homework, projects and other varied assessments. The online grading account jupitergrades.com is accessible for students and parents to track current grades. 100-90%=A 89-80%=B 79-70%=C 69-60%=D 59 and below =F
